As we’re still coming to grips with the impact COVID-19 is having on our personal and business lives, let’s stop and remember we’re all in this together. While that phrase may seem a little overused, at SHAZAM we mean it. For the past few weeks, our continuous message to the financial institutions we serve has been clear – we are here to help.
SHAZAM’s network is reliable and strong. We continue to process hundreds of thousands of transactions every week. Just like other responsible companies, we’ve taken the proper precautions for our workforce based on CDC guidelines. Much of our work happens behind the scenes so we can continue with project plans and development, moving priorities forward even as the world seems to have come to a standstill.
The nation’s payments infrastructure is deemed a critical system, and SHAZAM’s role linking our clients into that system is one we take very seriously. There have been questions about transaction trends, and I’m happy to share them with you.
Debit card use is most prevalent within the nondiscretionary categories — think groceries. We’re seeing modest declines in nondiscretionary spending, with larger declines in discretionary categories — think restaurants and travel. But again, our overall transaction numbers for the year are still up. Consumers are nevertheless spending, and that’s positive news!
A few months ago, I would’ve never imagined our world would face such uncertain and trying times, but I remain confident the challenges we face together will make us stronger. To preserve that strength, SHAZAM will maintain all financial commitments we’ve made through our partnerships with state banking associations and credit union leagues nationwide. The domino effect COVID-19 has caused shouldn’t erode the monetary resources used for the important work they provide on your behalf. One of SHAZAM’s core values is integrity.
